Renewable energy key to northern workforce in 2020

The renewable energy industry is to create 400,000 jobs by 2020, with the North of England as the greatest beneficiary.

Banks Renewables, based in Durham, is currently planning the construction of wind farms on two different sites; Moor House and Lambs Hill.

The north-east’s prospects are further boosted by Tata Steel’s new Offshore Processing Centre in Hartlepool – worth £2m. The company will produce piping to use as a foundation for offshore wing turbines.

Hartlepool-based JDR Cables is to supply cabling, having invested £30m in upgrading its factory. The OGN group is also constructing a facility in Newcastle, manufacturing wind turbine foundations, with a projected total of over 700 jobs being created.

In the North West, 940 new jobs with Camell Laird and Siemens are to be created at Gwynt y Môr windfarm and the Renewable Energy Engineering Centre in Manchester.

Around 2,000 new opportunities will also be created across Scotland and Wales, while 450 jobs are set to be produced in Northern Ireland following DONG Energy’s £40m investment in Belfast Harbour.
